Our Mission “To assist in alleviating chronic hunger and poverty in the Central Okanagan”. In 1983, the Kelowna Community Food Bank Society set up operation in a church basement to meet emergency food needs for the community. Over the next two decades, the Kelowna Food Bank grew from serving 600 people per year to nearly 30,000, with nearly a third of them children. Values We value integrity, honesty and transparency.
We value organizational sustainability and believe that sound management and accounting practices are essential to our long-term effectiveness. We value working in partnership with the community. We value knowledge and believe that education and community awareness are the keys to helping those who are without, learn to help themselves. We value our staff and volunteers.
We value volunteering and believe that through community service, we build a sense of respect for others and the world around us. We value efficiency and believe that wise use of our food resources, our staff and volunteer talents and our donor dollars is central to our success. We value human dignity and believe that preserving self esteem of those we serve is equally important as providing food.
Our Vision for the Kelowna Food Bank Ensuring everyone in our community is well fed with healthy, nutritious food. Providing food hampers that are full of nutritious food from all food groups. Strengthening our partnerships with food and meal providing agencies to end the cycle of poverty and hunger. This includes supporting breakfast, snack and lunch programs for children. Increasing and expanding our Food Security programs to further empower our clients to help themselves.
Establishing a Rooftop Garden at our facility to provide fresh produce to our clients and partner agencies. Developing a Community Food Mapping project to identify healthy, inexpensive local food sources with easy access for all community members. Implementing a Community Kitchen where our clients and other community members would receive instruction and collaborate on menu planning, food preparation and budgeting.
